In 2011, there were approximately 2,000 cases of malaria diagnosed in the UK and each year around 10 people in the UK die of malaria.
It can sometimes be difficult for travellers to get the antimalarials they need: GPs often don’t provide any antimalarial service and recommend the pharmacy; nearly all antimalarials require a prescription, so pharmacists have to send the person back to their GP, but the GP either doesn’t provide private prescriptions or charges up to £25. What’s more the antimalarial advice can sometimes change at every step.
The journey to get an antimalarial can often seem to take longer than a trip to Goa!
knowmalaria was formed to make it easier for travellers to get any antimalarials they may need - either online, with mail order delivery, or from pharmacies or clinics using the knowmalaria service.
Our goal at knowmalaria is to help travellers begin their journey safely and provide them with antimalarials, health advice and tips which could help reduce the number of people coming back to the UK with malaria.
Harnek Chera MRPharmS
Our Pharmacist Director formed knowmalaria® in 2009 with a team of pharmacists who knew there had to be a better way for people to get the antimalarials they need. Having registered in 1999 as a Pharmacist, his personal interest in travel identified the need to make travel health advice simpler. Since 2004, his role as Superintendent Pharmacist for a group of UK based community pharmacies has seen him play an extended role with Primary Care Trusts and Local Pharmaceutical Commitees in implementation and delivery of new patient focussed services and he is a member of the Pharmacists Professional Group in the International Society of Travel Medicine.
